Objective: Design and build a bottle opener!
Tools: SolidWorks, laser cutter & brains
Partner: Bryn
We started by examining the bottles at hand. We first measured the inner and outer radii of two bottles' caps. We did this to make sure that the caps we were dealing with were of a standard size. (I went as far as counting the grooves on them. It turns out they have 21 each.)
As I was thinking of different methods to open a bottle, Bryn sketched some of the design ideas she had. Then we discussed what type of a bottle opener we wanted to build. Considering the materials we were given, we eliminated the ideas of puncturing the cap to get rid of the vacuum and flattening the grooves from both sides. We decided that using the regular lever model was the way to go.
Next, we focused on what shape we wanted our bottle opener to have. Here are some of our sketches:

After getting our classmates' opinions, we agreed to build the octopus and 2014 out of foam. Here is the result:
